Types of mouthguards The three (3) basic types of mouthguards are:
- Custom made mouthguards – Considered to provide
the best protection for the teeth, lips and jaw. Custom made mouthguards are made by Dental professionals using
a mould (cast) of the upper teeth to fit the individual’s mouth. They provide the best protection due to their
close fit, comfort and cushioning (shock absorption) effect. They are the most popular option and are recommended by
your Dental Professional.
- Boil and bite
mouthguards – Chemists and sports stores sell "boil and bite" mouthguards, once
the lining is softened in boiling water, the person bites on the mouthguard to help it take the shape of their mouth. These
mouthguards may not conform to the person’s bite and can be uncomfortable to wear. The ADA and Standards Australia do not recommend
over-the-counter or ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards. An over-the-counter mouthguard may be a short-term solution if
there is absolutely no alternative available.
- Stock
mouthguards – A ready to wear mouthguard that comes pre-formed. While these are the least
expensive mouthguard, they tend to be uncomfortable and fit poorly. These are a bulky gutter of rigid plastic available from Chemists
and sports stores. They interfere with speech and breathing and because they are not firmly secured offer a false sense of
protection. The only adjustment possible is minor trimming with a knife or scissors.
